HomeGrown Cassetto v1.31 KONTAKT UPDATE
The idea behind Cassetto was to create a synthesizer which has an old and slightly faulty sound as well as a fairly fixed yet interesting architecture. The end result is a synth with it’s own character and capable of some very unique tones. Although Kontakt is often used for complex samples, Cassetto uses sampled oscillators so that it is a true synthesizer and all sounds are constructed in the same way as any other subtractive synth, it comes with 200 presets with more to come, however it is also a synth that invites you to make your own.

2 Oscillators with both multi-sampled cassette sampled sound and single cycle Waveforms (100 selections in total)
Noise Oscillator sampled from Tape
Unstable for warbling the oscillator pitch
Dual Filters with a large choice of filter types
Parallel Filters or One for each Oscillator
3 LFOs with 30 selectable Waveforms, LFO1/2 reset on note on, LFO3 is free running

HG Sounds Kosmos Infekted Collection KONTAKT HG Sounds Kosmos Infekted Collection KONTAKT
Infekted combines the previously released Starburst with another 3 collections of sounds designed with a virus TI. This is a stunning collection bringing 542 Multi-Sampled Instruments to Kontakt. To get the most out of Kosmos Infekted you should have the full version of Kontakt 5.3, although there is support for Kontakt 4 with a few features missing. The Kosmos scripts for Kontakt are currently made up of 2 types of instrument:

Kosmos Full

The Kosmos ‘Full’ script emulates a classic 2 Oscillator Synthesizer where the Waveforms are comprised of all the samples in the Release. The synth has 2 Layers each with a selection of 6 filters, 3 LFOs assignable to Filter, Pitch and Volume of each synth layer. The effects section has Tempo Synced Delay, Reverb and a Modulator which is selectable between Flanger, Phaser and Chorus. There are 3 envelopes, one for the Amp of each layer and the third for the Filter Cutoff. Aftertouch and the Modulation Wheel can be assigned to various parameters. There is a sophisticated Randomize system at the local section and the global level with an adjustable amount. The Kosmos Full scripts are great for creating complex unique pads/sounds on the fly with ease.

The Process

Firstly, I chose the Elektron Analogue Four for the Oscillators as it has a nice selection of strong analog waveforms. Each of the Raw Waveforms was then recorded note by note over 4 octaves onto a very old and well worn cassette. I have owned this cassette since at least 1987 as it had me playing guitar badly around that time, which was recorded over a Pet Shop Boys album funnily enough. It was the 3rd cassette I tried and had the most dropouts which is what I was looking for. This is the Cassette:

I had been looking for a suitable cassette deck for this project for a long while, and a friend came up with this one (JVC CD-1635 MK II) which is actually a really nice machine after bit of de-oxit, I’d already tried a couple of others with auto gain inputs which was a bit too extreme, I was after subtlety. Here is what it looks like (you can see the cassetto! cassette if you look closely).

These were then recorded into the computer through a focusrite OctoPre and each 4 second sample was looped manually at different lengths to provide the multisampled oscillators. I was actually surprised how lovely they sounded once tamed by Filters. This is what some of the raw unfiltered waveforms sound like with random start time (phase).

It also occurred to me that it might be interesting to use some single cycle loops from clean recordings of the A4, which would add a whole other dimension to the sound possibilities, so I did this for 5 of them, and they sounded good and added a nice contrast to the tape Oscillators. I then finished off the oscillators by creating some detuned and mixed groups of the single cycles. I also tried to be a bit imprecise with the looping of the single cycles to give them a slightly detuned broken oscillator sound, although it is subtle.

The Synth Engine

I created a soundset for Bassline-101, and whilst working on it, I really came to appreciate the simplicity of the SH-101 design and so in my head that was the starting point for Cassetto. As you can probably see it went way beyond that simplicity, but I tried hard to keep to the idea of making it hard to make bad sounds which is the strong point of the 101. I just can’t seem to keep things that simple…

The Saffron Bass Synthesizer is the first in a series of three inspiring Kontakt 5 instruments, the so called ‘Blue Orb Series’. Saffron is a dual oscillator synthesizer intended to make huge fat, deep bass sounds. But don’t be fooled by it’s name. Also Pads, Synths, Strings and other types of sounds are possible with this versatile synthesizer.

There are 60 different waveforms to choose from, 30 per oscillator. Each OSC has 3 envelope generators.(Amplifier, Filter and Pitch) and 3 different filters, (Low Pass, High Pass and Band Pass). There are 2 Low Frequency Oscillators (LFO’s), a Pitch LFO and a Filter LFO with a choice between 4 different waveforms (Sine, Saw, Square & Random), or the LFO can be switched off. Both LFO’s can be used at the same time. The sounds can be modulated via Velocity, Aftertouch, Key Follow and the Modulation wheel. And to top this all off, you have a choice between 8 different FX (Digital Reverb, Digital Delay, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Compressor, 2-Band EQ, Skreamer distortion) and an Arpeggiator.

Saffron already comes with a big selection of sounds for you to play with (102 instruments and 56 multis). The big amount of controls encourages you to make your own. The possibillities are endless.

CL-Projects Hypernova KONTAKT CL-Projects Hypernova KONTAKT
HYPERNOVA is the new 'Top of the line' Kontakt synthesizer from CL-Projects. Based on a well known polyphonic synthesizer from the late 90's that was capable of emulating Minimoog, Jupiter 8, Juno 106 and ARP 2600 sounds. The Hypernova Kontakt synth is no different. It can also emulate classic synthesizer sounds, making use of sampling technology instead of the virtual analog and substractive technology the original synth used.

Hypernova is a 3 oscillator synthesizer which uses 50 different sound sets per oscillator. The sounds were sampled without the filter, LFO and effects settings. All the sounds were recreated with the Kontakt's filters, LFO's and effects. Hypernova is therefore an ideal tool for sound designers and musicians who want to make their own sounds.

THE CONTROLS PAGE
contains the parameters to completely alter and edit the sound. The Hypernova synthesizer has a 3 oscillator architecture. All the parameters on the controls page are available for the 3 oscillators seperately. Four different waveforms can be selected for each oscillator: square, saw, noise and special. The special waveform is a choice between 50 different waveforms, selectable via a menu. Each oscillator has level, pan, tuning and modulation parameters. The global section contains the parameters that affects all three oscillators at once. On the the top left are the poly, solo, legato and offset settings with the possibility to change the note order in which the notes are played when set to solo, legato or offset: last, next, low and high. On the top right you can find the Portamento and Unisono parameters. The filter section contains 5 different filters of which 4 are ladder filters known for their Moog like character and the fifth filter is the well known Pro53 filter. Each filter has its own frequency and resonance setting, also accompanied with their modulation settings for velocity, modwheel, pressure and key track. The envelopes section contains three different envelopes for amp, filter and pitch each with their own presets. Last but not least there is a very extensive LFO section. Each oscillator has an LFO for pitch, filter, level and pan with a choice between four different waveforms: square, saw, tri (triangle) and s/h (sample and hold).

THE EFFECTS PAGE
contains 7 different effects. A convolution reverb with a choice between 7 different spaces: chamber, room, hall, church, plate, spring and gate. Other effects are delay, chorus, flanger, phaser, distortion and a 3-band equalizer, each with their own effect presets.

THE ARP & MODS PAGE
exists out of a 64 step arpeggiator with a random arp generator. Beneath the arpeggiator there's a small mod section where you can change the bend range, the pitch LFO and level LFO sensitivity for the modwheel and pressure for the three oscillators.
